Why Does Life Seem To Move Through Different Stages?

Recognising change without turning a human life into a fixed sequence

Why can one part of life feel as though it belongs to a completely different stage?

Life can feel divided into stages because the structures that organise experience change. Roles, relationships, priorities, identity, responsibilities and direction can all shift.

Stages Can Be Recognised Without Becoming Rules

A stage is useful when it gives language to what is happening. It becomes misleading when it implies that everyone should move through the same sequence at the same speed.

Outer and Inner Change Do Not Always Move Together

Circumstances may change quickly while identity and meaning take longer to catch up. Or life may look stable while an important inner transition has already begun.

Five Human Questions

Meaning asks: What does this mean?

Belonging asks: Where do I belong?

Agency asks: What moves me forward?

Becoming asks: What is becoming of me?

Navigation asks: Where am I headed?

More than one question can be active at the same time. The purpose is not to force your experience into one category, but to notice which relationship gives you the clearest point of orientation.

The In-Between Can Be a Stage of Its Own

There can be a period when the old arrangement no longer fits and the new one is not yet established. The absence of a clear destination does not mean nothing is happening.

Integration May Follow Visible Change

A decision, move or ending can happen before its meaning is fully integrated. Belonging may need rebuilding. Identity may need time to adjust. Direction may become clearer only after the change has been lived.
